James Joyce in Czech Environment: A Comparative Analysis of Translations of the Short Story "The Dead"

This bachelor thesis deals with a comparative analysis of four translations of the short story "The Dead" from the collection of short stories called Dubliners which was written by the well-known Irish author James Joyce. Four translations were selected for the analysis - translations by Josef Hrůša (1933), Zdeněk Urbánek (1959), Aloys Skoumal (1988) and Kateřina Hilská (2012). The aim of this thesis is to analyse Czech translations and compare individual methods the translators undertook and examine them on the lexical, stylistic and syntactic level. The evaluation of translations will be based on the degree of translation adequacy. It analyses to what extent the translation mirrors the original text and to what extent it preserves the meaning of the analysed expression. Firstly, the bachelor thesis puts Dubliners into context and describes the history of the translations of James Joyce's works in Bohemia and introduces the four translators of Dubliners. Secondly, the study analyses Joyce's short story in terms of extratextual and intratextual factors. Subsequently, the thesis deals directly with the analysis of four translations and in conclusion gives a summary of the procedures of individual translators
